Prof. Mayilvahanan Natarjan

         President ITACCS-Indian chapter (2005-2007) 

Dr Mayilvahanan Natarajan is a pioneer of Orthopedic Oncology in the country and has introduced the concept of Limb Salvage Surgery by Custom Mega Prosthesis. His personal series of over 1000 surgeries of Custom Mega Prosthesis is the highest number by a single surgeon in the world. He has established Orthopedic Oncology as a sub-specialty in Orthopedic Surgery in India

In recognition of this work, he has received several awards which include:

Wishbone Trust Award-British Orthopedic Association (1999)

International Cancer Technology Award-International Union against Cancer (UICC) (2004)

Dynamic Osteosynthesis Award-Asian Association for Dynamic Osteosynthesis (2003)

Award of Appreciation from Japanese Orthopedic Association (2004)

Dr B C Roy National Award by Medical Council of India (2004)

Lemelson Recognition and Mentoring Programme (L-Ramp) Innovation Award By The Lemelson Foundation, USA and Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai in recognition of his efforts in innovating the Custom Mega Prosthesis (2005)

Best Doctor Award by Government of Tamil Nadu for services to the Disabled. (2004)

He has invented several types of Custom Mega Prosthesis and has several patents to his credit. He has authored 7 books and has contributed various chapters in many books. He has published widely in National journals and has 19 papers in peer reviewed International Journals. He was the first Indian to be elected as President of Asia Pacific Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (2000-02). He is currently the President of the Indian Orthopedic Association (2005-06).
